Planting Important Seeds

Soil sin't the only place we plant seeds. The Energy Institute High School has sent several groups out to the farm this year to learn about various topics. The group we hosted most recently joined us to learn about small scale farming, soil life, water conservation, and the value of knowing more about your place. The students are just beginning to experiment with growing their own food in eco-tower aquaponics systems on their campus. We hope that we could provide some helpful guidance and are excited to hear how their project goes.

Forage + Gather: Dining on the Wild South

Join us on the farm for a special dinner combining southern comfort food with the foraged flavor of Houston. Chef Sky Hanka, Foragers Kristen and Joshua Rosas, and Bee Holleran will lead a four course meal featuring southern favorites made with love incorporating ingredients like beauty berry, chicken of the woods, chantrelles, elderberry, loofa, and other wild seasonal treats that sprout around Houston. We are lucky to have fellow East Enders Sigma Brewery sponsoring beer for the evening. To complete this Houston experience, the dishes will be served on handmade serving platters made by Sierra Estes.

Finca Farmer Highlight: Zay Gamez

We've been short handed off and on for much of the last few months meaning a lot has fallen on Zay's shoulders as our Farm Manager. She has handled it with calmness, hard work, and a true farmer's willingness and patience. She's been in charge of our planting plan for the season, managing our harvest schedule, daily operations, CSA packing and deliveries as well as our greenhouse seedlings. You can find her at the Urban Harvest Saturday Farmer's Market almost every Saturday from 8am-12pm. We hope you'll stop by and say thank you for all she does for ag in Houston.

Green Zebras Dance Performance & Potluck

Earlier this month, the Pilot Dance Project, under the artistic direction of Adam Castaneda, opened its 2018-2019 season with a site-specific work by Houston-based choreographer Lori Yuill called Green Zebras. This agriculturally inspired dance performance consisted of several parts and ranged all over the farm, concluding with a community potluck under the oaks where attendees could even order special dances off a "menu".
